In the current climate, getting value for your money is more important than ever. But in the wine world, when we're bombarded with everything from offers of cheap cases to exclusive deals on the most famous Bordeaux, it can be hard to distinguish what represents true value for money.
The most important thing to remember is that great value wines aren't necessarily the same as cheap wines - they should, quite simply, be worth the money you pay for them.
As wine producers can only make a limited quantity per year, the prices of the most sought-after wines are driven up by demand. In turn, this fame drives the prices even higher as the product develops a recognisable and desirable 'brand'. While this may sound like a problem, it also means that there are huge opportunities available to the savvy and adventurous wine buyer. This is because it is the undiscovered and emerging markets that provide the best value - those small French chateaux that largely serve a local population, the incredible English vineyards just popping onto the nation's radar, and of course wine from the Balkans. Made with a huge amount of attention to detail, many countries from the latter region are producing exceptionally high-quality wines which retail at an attractive price. The fact that countries such as the Republic of Macedonia are only just emerging onto the international wine radar means that you can get some great bargains - as trade publication Harper's Agony Aunt column recently observed "all of them offer relatively high value for the money you pay".
