Technology Brings Benefits for those Serving Great Value Wines

The rapid rise in technology has fundamentally changed the way we dine out. Rather than blundering into any restaurant we happen to walk past, we now regularly read reviews, review menus and ask for recommendations online.
This is excellent news for those whose passion, creativity and skill in the kitchen has garnered them wide acclaim, but as yet hasn’t made a huge difference for those putting together a restaurant cellar. Yes, a good wine list will be feted online as much as a good menu, but to those who lack an expert knowledge of vintages it’s not as meaningful as a photograph of a really delicious meal. This may change, however, with the advent of clever smartphone app Raisinable. Using a database of wine retail prices, the app allows potential diners to browse restaurants’ wine lists and see exactly how much of a mark up they’ve put on each bottle. A simple traffic light system demonstrates just how reasonable the price hike is, with green being 200% or lower, amber being around 300%, and red being 400% or more. The app was created with the aim of enabling consumers to see what they’re getting for their money. It’s no secret that restaurants make a huge proportion of their profit from wines, and it will be interesting to see what effect this app has on bookings. Although it might seem like a threat to our industry, this app is actually a fantastic opportunity for venues who want to showcase their great-value wine list. Never before have we been able to discuss value of wine in restaurants in such a simple way, not to mention one which actively invites consumers to learn more about our wines and pay closer attention to the lesser-known bottles on the list. If you feel like your wine list could use a bit of a spring clean, and want to add in some star value wines that will attract the users of Raisinable, why not talk to us about what Macedonian wines can offer? Vineyards such as Stobi are producing delicious, well-made wines that, because of their unusual origin, offer great value options to bars and restaurants.
