Wine Tastings – How they Can Boost Interest in New Wines

The sensory examination and evaluation of wine is traditionally called a wine tasting and is a great way to introduce new wines and regions to customers.

A wine tasting gives independent wine stores and wine clubs the opportunity to welcome guests to introduce new varieties, share knowledge of the wines selected whilst imparting more detailed information about the wines character and style, aromas and general characteristics perhaps comparing different grape varieties during the process.

A formal tasting would invite tasters to investigate the wines appearance, ‘in glass’ aroma, ‘in mouth’ sensations in addition to the finish (aftertaste) which together helps establish the complexity and character of the wines in addition to suitability for aging and drinking. Wines could be selected for their vintage, also known as a ‘horizontal’ tasting or from a single winery, known as a ‘vertical’ tasting, to better compare vineyard and vintages, respectively. Adding some fun to the proceedings can be a great idea. Wines could be tasted ‘blind’ to test customers knowledge to see if they can identify the grape and origin for example, perhaps with a prize for the most knowledgeable customer.

Alternatively, customers could blind taste their usual tipple against something new and exciting like our Zilavka to see which they rate as the best! An event like this will also help you interact with your customers, enabling you to share the wonderful history of Stobi wines, their Roman heritage and strong wine making traditions which have been married with modern wine making practices to create interesting characterful quality Macedonia wines. Events like this can be a huge success for both independent wine stores and wine clubs. Reg Brandon from the New Ash Green Club recently hosted a Stobi wine evening to present the new and emerging Tikveš region to his club members. Wines that were praised by the group included Stobi’s Muscat Ottonel, which Reg said “was the best white wine of the evening”. Also welcomed from the white wine collection was the Stobi Chardonnay which they found to be nicely balanced. By far the most praised wines from the Stobi Winery were the Indigenous Vranec varieties. Reg commented, “The Vranec was remembered by most as the one we liked at the Wine Gang tasting last year.” Reg also summarised the club’s comments by saying, “the Vranec Veritas Reserve was the wine of the evening, liked by everybody.” If you want to hold a wine tasting event in your store or at your wine club, then let us know and we will be happy to email you our wine specifications.
